Keep FOG (Fats, Oils, Grease) out of the drains!
FOG is the acronym for Fats, Oils, and Grease from food products. When FOG is washed down the drain, it sticks to the inside walls of the sewer lateral and sewer main. Eventually, the build up can clog the sewer pipe and prevent sewer flow. This can occur on your property and in the streets.
Fats, oils, and grease are a byproduct of cooking. They are found in such things as:
- Meat fat
- Cooking oil
- Lard and shortening
The use of a garbage disposal does not keep FOG out of the sewer. They grind the FOG into smaller pieces, which will eventually accumulate into larger pieces as it flows in the sewer.
What are the effects of FOG?
A build up of FOG can create a sewage blockage in your lateral and other home plumbing and cause a sewer overflow in your home or your neighbor’s home. The direct costs associated with cleanup average approximately $3,000. Depending on the extent of damage, the costs may exceed $10,000.00. Typical damage may include damage to the carpet, walls, furniture and personal items. Most importantly, there is possible contact with disease causing organisms since most plumbing is tied to a single lateral. Indirectly, an increase in operation and maintenance costs for the District’s collection system and treatment facility will occur. This will eventually create higher sewer charges for District customers.
How to reduce FOG?
The easiest and best methods to eliminate FOG are to dispose of it in your garbage or recycle it. Do not dispose of the FOG directly into the garbage as a free liquid. Allow the liquid to solidify and place in the garbage. If the liquid cannot solidify, mix with an absorbent product such as kitty litter or dirt to create a solid form and dispose in the garbage. Dispose of large amounts on several collection days. Please contact the City of Bakersfield or County of Kern to determine their requirements to recycle FOG.
Is a Grease Removal Device Needed?
Grease removal devices, sometimes referenced to as “grease traps”, are not required on a residential home, however, they are required on specific commercial properties. The devices are low cost and require minimal maintenance. Please contact us to determine if your facility is required to have a device or if you would like further information.
